This mustard yellow painted restaurant cannot be missed while walking on Dundas. I quickly looked at it and saw “Japanese curry”. Japanese curry is not the typical curry. Its taste leans towards sweetness than the typical curry where it has more cumin and turmeric.
The restaurant was busy even at 9pm (ok – Montreal has a lot to work on), but Mr.Butter and I always pick the right timing, just in between wave of crowds, so we had a table within 3 minutes.
The menu is simple. The variable is often the choice of meat.
I was torn between a conventional dish or something more special (tonkatsu pork or beef with cheese – as I watched Martina and Simon on Youtube, it seems like it is a thing to put cheese and half cooked egg yolk with Japanese curry). Since I never tried this place before and wanted to lessen the risk of regret, I chose the conventional route.
The curry was flavourful. The taste was unusual – quite different from the Japanese curry I had tasted in the past. So I told Mr.Butter “you know…this tastes like tomato sauce if you close your eyes. It has HQ sauce, I think”. I felt like I was eating tomato meat sauce with rice. It was strange. Once I let go of that association, I was enjoying my curry. The fried pork was nice and crisp – would be perfect if it was a bit thicker.
I don’t think Gyugyuya is a place I would crave for. It is nice to go when you want to grab a quick and inexpensive meal and the area.
Embarrassingly, this is my first time at the Just For Laugh festival. Shame on me...
After a few months of non-stop breakouts....I've finally given up and bought a Mia Clarisonic....
EVOO never stuck in my memory even when I often see delicious pictures from there....
