We all know grilled cheese is some fast but satisfying midnight snack. It’s quick and simple. Last few years, there had been some food truck popping up in Montreal that specialized in grilled cheese, but none of them really wooed me. The best one I had was from Le Cheese .
But the grilled cheese game didn’t stop at Le Cheese. MLT DWN, based in Kingston, opened up their doors on Mont-Royal and is making one of the most gourmet grilled cheese I’ve tasted!
MLT DWN is all about casual dining, but with gastronomic ingredient. As a no brainer, their cheese is not processed cheese and most of their goods are bought locally if permitted (because you know avocado can’t really grow in Montreal).
I was able to taste 4 different types of grilled cheese at MLT DWN where 2 of them were a monthly feature. Once the month is gone, the grilled cheese is gone too! You’ll have to wait until next year! I was sceptical when the owners of MLT DWN introduced their grilled cheese as gourmet food, but surprisingly, once I tasted them, I couldn’t agree more. Each grilled cheese had it all together. The flavors were so harmonious. Even the meatball grilled cheese (a monthly feature) caught me off guard. I never had a meatball with so much moisture. It was damn good.
But hold on, the excitement does not die down. They serve waffle fries! And a poutine version too! Something about waffle fries that make me love them so much. That is not all, MLT DWN has their version of dessert grilled cheese. We all know how tasty it is bread and nutella. MLT DWN stepped up and introduced cheesecake grilled cheese! The best way to describe the feeling when I was consuming it is “just like a kid first time tasting ice cream”, it was eye-opening. These sweet grilled cheese are dangerous!
Oddly enough, I did not find any of these grilled cheese heavy nor overly greasy. It had the perfect balance.
So when you go there, don’t just go there and order a plain old simple grilled cheese. Go all in and order their gourmet grilled cheese. You won’t be disappointed!
