Hobbit Bistro: My type of French food

Hobbit Bistro: My type of French food

A recent trip to Quebec city was to explore Jacques-Cartier Park. Instead, it was a culinary discovery. Mr.Butter did it again; Le Hobbit is truly an amazing experience.

Without any notice ( I was told we would go to somewhere very casual), I dressed myself with a too comfortable semi-sportive apparel, but only after did I realize that Hobbit Bistro was the dinner destination. No fear, we were not treated any differently and it was quite a relief that atmosphere was quite relaxing although a bit of dress up would fit the ambiance just as well.

To make a choice was difficult as the menu offered many interesting dishes. In the end, we chose what we thought would be the most decadent (because a 15 km hike was all the excuse needed for that specific evening).

We were not slightly disappointed.

Duck Duo

This duck could not be more perfectly seared. Every bite was so indulgent. The specific ratio between duck fat and the meat was successfully well achieved. The lentil was a well balance to lighten the richness of the duck. The fried duck rillette was definitely overshadowed by the breast. This dish would be more than fine without the rillette. However,  I had to admit the sweet apricot jam with the rillette was a quite nice pairing.

Matchstick fries

These fries were undoubtedly delicious. It was like a mini version of McDonald’s fries.

Bourbon Braised Red Deer

This was a tenderly braised red deer. Eating deer meat was a first and definitely would not be the last. The meat was rich in flavors but did not taste gamy.

Caramelized feuillete with pears

This feuillete was crisp, but I was not very fond of it. I thought it could use a bit more fruity sweetness.

Half baked half bitter chocolate with fleur de sel caramel

This was basically another way to present lava cake. Not the best choice to end our supper as our main meals were quite heavy already. Any chocolate lover would not resist this.
If I had to go to Quebec City tomorrow, I would not hesitate to go to Le Hobbit again. Le Hobbit gave my palate too much pleasure. I have yet come across a restaurant that can cook duck as well as Le Hobbit. I personally think the duck was far more outstanding than Au Pied du Cochon’s duck in a can. Le Hobbit can easily become a favorite if the distance isn’t an issue.
