Vancouver is probably the first wave bringing this organic food consumption in Canada, or so I believe. When Vancity comes to mind, I think of Lululemon, mountains, active lifestyle and of course, healthy diet. So what better way to introduce myself to Vancouver than eating organic like a local.
Unlike the name indicates, Aphrodite’s Organic Cafe is not just cafe. It offers full meal menu with local organic food ensuring the smallest ecological footprint possible. They are mostly known for their pies, so popular that a shop only for pies is opened diagonally across the restaurant.
Wild Mushroom Quiche
This quiche brings something new with the shiitake mushroom. Like any quiche that can easily becomes heavy, this one is no exception especially with the generous amount of gruyere cheese. I guess organic food does not always translate to fat-free. The salad definitely helps to lessen the guilt.
Roma Basil Brie Melt
I think of this dish as a massive bruschetta grilled cheese. The abundance of melting brie really makes the sandwich very savory. Like the wild mushroom quiche, a meadow salad is served on the site, which I personally think is an exceptional yet simple salad. Their house dressing is great, that I wish I could actually purchase some of it. It’s those vinaigrettes that make any salad delicious.
This lamb chop with quinoa is definitely the best dish out of the three. This is by far one of the tenderest lamb chop I had. It is remarkably scrumptious. Although we are not asked the level of “doneness” and we end up with a well done meat, the lamb chop remains surprisingly tender. Maybe organic does mean superior quality food.
To end the night, we indulge ourselves with a slice of apple pie. Other unique fillings are available, but my sister wants to play it safe and quite honestly, adores their apple pie a bit too much. Without a doubt, she enjoys the apple pie much more than I do. I find it the crust a bit too hard for my liking. I actually prefer my local supermarket apple pies back in Montreal. To each of their own.
Aphrodite’s organic cafe is not my favorite eatery in Vancouver, but is a nice experience with organic food. It is nice to know that I can still eat quality food with a reasonable price all while being ecological responsible. I know Apohrodite’s organic cafe is not to everyone’s palate, but it does add more options to those that has pure organic diet.
