I was invited to Tacos and Tortas’ charity event, Pay what you can, where all funds collected went to a non-profit organisation. I had the opportunity to taste a few items in the menu, mainly tacos, in a very cozy ambiance.
Before the tacos were served, we had tortilla soup, which is essentially a tomato soup with pieces of tortillas, cheese, and avocado. The soup was very satisfying and filling. But, I wouldn’t mind to have a few additional pieces of avocado. One thing to consider, if you want to taste the taco, you have to share this soup or you’ll be full before the tacos come.
Mojito and Paloma.
These cocktails were the best. Many bar/restaurant should follow their footsteps. They had the perfect ratio of alcohol and sweetness. I would come back just for their drinks.
Pescado
Nicely fried fish taco, but lacked flavors.
Pastor
Marinated pork with pineapple. My most preferred one out of the 4 tacos. However, it could be better with a bit more coriander and pineapple (especially on the left one).
Carnitas and Chorizo
Carnitas was slightly meatier than Chorizo. Other than that, I could hardly tell them apart from the taste itself. Again, missing seasoning.
Three types of sauces were offered to eat with the tacos. With the spiciest on the left and two mild ones on the right. The left was made with habanero peppers, which was my favorite one as it provides a kick of spiciness. The 2 on the right were made with jalapeno and the color difference came from the green and red tomatoes.
These sauces weren’t enough as as seasoning of the tacos. Throughout my seating, I was desiring more tang or more salt.
Churro
I personally love churros. But the presentation of these wasn’t flattering at all. I wished they could have been stacked like a fire camp and the sauces put on the side in small containers. These churros weren’t cooked thoroughly. The inside was semi raw when it should be fluffy like a waffle or donut. The exterior was a bit too hard.
Tacos & Tortas had some hits and misses. I was definitely a fan of their soup and their cocktails. Their taco needed a bit more ingredients to bring out the flavors. With that adjustment, 13$ for 4 tacos, I would say it is awesome.
